The Arts Society Goring Volunteering Projects 2024-25

As part of our promotion of the arts, in addition to our lectures, study days, visits and tours we have a small annual budget which we use to support creative, artistic activities in the community. We are passionate about the benefits that creativity and arts education can bring to our community. Here is a brief review of projects we have supported this year and what is still to come.

Film Animation workshops for young people:

Building on the success of the two film festivals held during the GAP festivals of 2022 and 2024, we have continued to support film animation workshops for young people We look forward to seeing the results of their creative endeavours in Festival 2026.

Withymead Nature Reserve:

 A delightful oil pastels workshop for children was held on the reserve by children’s author, Emma Shoard. She used her beautifully illustrated book, ‘Life on the Thames’, as a stimulus for children to create their own wildlife drawings and mobiles to take home.

Wallingford School Dance Workshop:

Funding to support the arts in secondary schools has been severely cut over the years so we were pleased to support a contemporary dance workshop for Year 10 GCSE dance pupils and Year 9 pupils considering taking GCSE dance next year. The workshop was led by The James Cousins dance company who had choreographed ‘Within Her Eyes’ (a professional dance performance on the GCSE dance curriculum). The workshop focused on developing contact work, learning dance repertoire and creating a performance piece to be used in the GCSE examination and which was performed to acclaim at the Spotlight dance show in April.

Friends of Goring Library (FOGL):

We funded two different workshops. The first for young children with a parent/carer continued our popular story sack workshop creations to develop story telling and sequencing skills. Secondly, local artist, Jane Dipple, led another gelli plate printing workshop for primary aged children. The task involved making decorative collage papers using the gelli plates and then cutting out elements of these to create art works and cards.

Remembrance Poppies - A Community Project, with the support of Goring Parish Council:

We are collaborating with the Local History Society and Cleeve by Goring WI, to produce a poppy installation on the village sign in the Rectory Garden, to mark both Remembrance Day and the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The installation on the village sign will take the form of a cascade of handmade poppies, flowing down from the top.  Two drop-in workshops will be held in September.
